Can mosquitoes breed in clean water?
Yes. Aedes mosquitoes, which can transmit dengue in Singapore, can breed in clean, stagnant water. The water does not need to be visibly dirty, and even a small amount in a container can provide a breeding place. Plant-pot plates, flower vases and other water-holding items therefore need attention. (NEA: Preventing mosquito breeding)
NEA recommends checking for and removing potential breeding sites at least once a week through the Mozzie Wipeout. Empty collected water and prevent it from accumulating again. Clear-looking water is not proof that a container is free of mosquito eggs or larvae. (NEA: Preventing mosquito breeding)
