What is the difference between flying ants and termites?

Flying ants have a narrow, pinched waist, bent antennae and front wings that are longer than their hind wings. Winged termites have a broader waist, straighter antennae and two pairs of wings of roughly equal length. Compare several features together rather than relying on colour or size alone. (EPA: Identifying and controlling termites; K-State: Winged ants and termites)

A clear close-up of an intact insect is more useful than a pile of detached wings. Both ants and termites can shed their wings after a mating flight, so wing loss by itself does not identify the pest. If insects are emerging indoors or you also find timber damage, arrange identification and an inspection. (UC IPM: Ant identification and management)
