Termite Mud Tubes on a Wall
Termite mud tubes on a wall can look like narrow earthy tracks along a skirting, frame or wall joint. Photograph the full route and nearby timber before disturbing the material.
The short answer
Shelter tubes are a recognised sign of subterranean termites. An apparent tube still needs identification; its presence alone does not tell you the extent of timber damage or whether activity is current.
UC IPM: Subterranean and other termitesCompare the clues
Use these observations to explain the concern. A possible explanation still needs to be checked at the property.
| What you notice | What it could mean | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Earthy track along a skirting | Possible shelter tube | Keep intact and request identification |
| Track disappears behind cabinetry | Inspection access is limited | Discuss access before authorising opening work |
| Damaged timber nearby | Damage needs separate assessment | Record it without probing or loading the timber |
What could explain the signs?
Use the surrounding evidence to describe the concern. These possibilities help frame an inspection; they do not confirm the cause in your property.
An earthy track at a joint
Include a wide photograph showing where the track begins and ends. Note whether it continues behind a fixed cabinet or into an area that cannot be seen.
Material that resembles a tube
Do not identify it from colour alone. Ask the inspecting business to distinguish insect-built material from dirt, sealant or building residue and record its conclusion.
What you can check first
Keep the track intact for inspection. Record the room, wall and neighbouring timber fittings. Avoid scraping it off, opening wall finishes or applying a product before the findings have been documented.
When to arrange an assessment
Arrange a termite assessment when a suspected tube appears on building fabric or near timber. Ask what can be inspected without damage and whether a separate building assessment is needed for damaged material.
Termite Control SingaporeCommon questions
Use the observations to ask specific questions before agreeing to an inspection or further work.
Should I break the tube to see whether termites return?
Leave that decision to the inspector. Photographing the intact feature preserves its location and appearance for the initial assessment.
What should I include in an enquiry?
Include your property type, the exact affected area, when the sign appeared and whether it has returned. SG Pest Control receives the enquiry; inspection, findings and any work must be agreed separately with the business responsible.
Not sure what you have noticed?
Tell us where the concern is, what you have seen and whether it keeps returning.
