Get the preparation sheet before clearing the room
Ask for a room-by-room list showing what to move, leave in place, bag or make accessible. US EPA advises reducing clutter without taking affected items into clean areas, and keeping cleaned items sealed. Do not interpret a general online checklist as instructions for every treatment.
Create separate item lists
List washable fabrics, fragile belongings, electronics, medicines and items that cannot tolerate heat or moisture. Ask the business how each group is handled. A suitcase of mixed items is difficult to track once preparation starts.
Agree responsibilities
Clarify who moves heavy furniture, dismantles the bed and handles waste. If you cannot complete a task safely, tell the business before the appointment and ask how the scope or fee changes.
Make laundering and storage traceable
Follow fabric and appliance care instructions and the agreed control plan. EPA notes that washing alone may not be enough and that cleaned items need protection from re-exposure. Label bags by room and by whether contents are awaiting treatment or already cleaned. Do not assume a bag left in the sun has treated its contents.
Keep a simple checklist
For each bag, record the item group, room and completed handling step. Keep untreated and completed bags apart so household members can use the same system.
Disclose practical limitations
Tell the business if you have no suitable dryer, limited storage or shared laundry facilities. Ask for an alternative plan before spending money on a method your household cannot carry out.
Confirm treatment-day and return arrangements
Request the written occupancy, ventilation, re-entry and cleaning instructions for the chosen method. Explain who lives in the property, pets, access limitations and sensitive belongings. Do not use domestic heaters to attempt whole-room treatment; EPA cautions that improvised heating is ineffective and hazardous.
Prepare the follow-up record as well
Keep the initial findings, agreed room boundary and preparation checklist with the quotation. Ask which items can be unpacked, when monitoring starts and who reviews new sightings. The number of rooms, preparation assistance and return visits can affect the total price.
